Improving your email with Junk Filters
There are two methods that you can use to improve your email system by
eliminating spam. Both methods are not 100% effective. Both
non junk messages may be mistakenly marked as junk, and junk messages
may not be marked as junk. After setting up either method it is
highly recommended that you check the junk folder(s) to see if any real
messages were mistakenly marked as junk.
Method 1 – X-IMail-SPAM server filter
Our mail server marks messages it determines are junk with a flag of:
X-IMail-SPAM
This flag is placed at the beginning of the messages real
subject. You can use the webmail system to setup a rule to filter
all messages containing that flag to a new/existing junk folder.
Remember that not every message that is marked with this flag is really
a junk mail message, so check the Junk folder from time to time.
The steps you need to take are:
- Log in to your email account using the webmail interface
- Click on the Rules option in the lower left corner

- Example of where the rules link is in the webmail interface
- Click on the New button to create a new rule --- this will take you to the Add Rule screen

- The new button in the Rules screen
- Enter the following data for the new rule:
- Enter a Name for this Rule
- Add the Rule Condition
- Click on the Add button --- This will take you to the Add Rule Condition screen
- Where = Subject
- Comparison = Contains
- Search = X-IMail-SPAM
- Match Case = Unchecked
- Click Save and Close button when finished

- The Add Rule Condition screen
- Set the action to take when conditions listed above are met
- Action Type = Move to mailbox
- Target = Junk
- Click Save button when finished

- The Edit Rule screen after options have been entered
Now you can log out and any new messages that arrive marked with that
flag in the subject will be moved into the Junk folder, if you do not
have a Junk folder one is created for you when the first new marked
message arrives.
Method 2 – Thunderbird Junk mail controls
Thunderbird has a junk mail filter that you can teach which messages
are junk and which messages are not junk. As you teach it which
messages are junk it will then match similar messages in the future and
automatically mark them as junk. If a message is mistakenly
marked as junk by this system you can mark it as not junk. This
will also teach thunderbird how to handle things in the future with
similar messages.
The steps you need to take are:
- Open Thunderbird
- Right Click on the account name and choose New Folder

- The Right click on account name menu options
- In the New Folder window enter the following:
- Name: tbjunk
- Create as a subfolder of: choose the account name of your horizon email account

- The New Folder creation options
